Flexera Residential Solar Leasing Opens Up Opportunity for More Residents to Have Solar Power - No Money Down!

Flexera launches new program for homeowners to go solar without buying the system

Solar panels on homes have become a common sight throughout Delmarva. Five years ago, shiny, silicon-based solar modules quietly absorbing the sun’s rays from atop a home were a rarity. Now, it is very likely you will see at least one home with solar in any community you enter. Some communities boast, seven or eight homes with solar panels. “In Delaware alone, over one thousand homeowners and businesses have installed solar,” said Finn McCabe, Regulatory Affairs Manager for Flexera, Inc., a solar installer in Delaware.

The dramatic growth in the regional solar industry is due to energy-minded homeowners who are determined to reduce their power costs. Young families, retiring homeowners, and soon to be retiring boomers on fixed budgets have all led the charge in residential solar purchases in the Delmarva region. Lower installation prices, tax incentives, and cash rebates have made solar ownership a feasible solution to rising power costs.

However, things change. Government incentives come and go, tax credits are not always usable, and many households have become more cash strapped than ever. Even with module prices at an all time low having the disposable income to invest in a home solar system is just not an option for many homeowners. However, where there is a need there is an opportunity and the private market will find a solution.

Now there is solar leasing in Delmarva for homeowners. A leased solar system has no down payment, no purchase, and no maintenance. The concept is new on the east coast but has actually been quite common on the west coast for half a decade. Market conditions and powerful consumer demand have  spread this opportunity to the east, particularly Delaware and Maryland.

Solar for homeowners is no longer a privilege of the cash ready buyer. With a decent credit score and enough available roof exposure to the sun, any homeowner can lease a solar system without laying out the cash to purchase it. “This program completely opens up the solar opportunity to thousands of homeowners in the region who cannot afford to buy a solar system, but now have the ability to reduce their power bills with a lease option,” commented John Donato, Marketing Director for Flexera. “The homeowner also does not have to worry about grants, rebates, tax credits, maintenance…anything,” continued Donato.

Flexera’s solar lease agreement entitles a homeowner to buy the power from the system for 20 years.  “The US Department of Energy is projecting a 250% increase in the cost per kilowatt hour by 2035, this means by 2035 a kilowatt hour could cost more than $0. 30.” said McCabe. “For homeowners who can’t afford or don’t want to buy solar, a solar lease could be the only way to protect themself from future energy costs they cannot control. The cost of a solar power monthly lease is significantly lower than the average monthly utility bill.

The average American homeowner could save an average of $10,000 to $20,000 over the term of the lease. Power generation is guaranteed by the leasing company along with all care, maintenance, and warranties. If the system generates more power than expected, the homeowner keeps it at no charge.

“Flexera has always focused on helping residents plan their energy future, and the solar lease program is a great way to extend solar benefits to a wider base,” said Donato.
